Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney lived up to expectations as the current front runner in Iowa. With less than a week before the very important Iowa straw poll, Mitt Romney only helped himself with a clean and polished performance during ABC's Sunday morning debate at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.
He scored points with the conservative crowd by attacking Barack Obama's recent statements about unilaterally invading Pakistan and meeting personally with the likes of Castro and Chavez. Romney said, "He's gone from Jane Fonda to Dr. Strangelove in one week", which drew laughter and applause from the audience.
Romney also stood tough against Senator Brownback's recent attacks that he is not pro-life. Governor Romney stated firmly, "I get tired of people that are holier than thou because they've been pro-life longer than I have." He later explained that his biggest mistake politically was while running for the Senate in Massachusetts in 1994 being effectively pro-choice while personally pro-life. Romney pointed out that when it came to making decisions on life as Governor that he always came down on the side of life and he would be a pro-life President.
Mitt Romney was very clear and thorough on issues such as health care, the war in Iraq, and fighting Jihadists. His knowledge and superb debating skills helped him distance himself from the other two front runners Rudy Giuliani and John McCain.
Mitt won the debate and is primed to win the straw poll in Ames, Iowa on August 11, 2007.
